Why does Mail revert to old settings whenever I close?

whenever close mail , re-open it, settings revert how used since before upgrading lion (i'm on 10.7.3). used have gmail , imap account school, , there several old smtp servers still in list. i've since gotten rid of imap , added exchange account, , deleted old smtp servers list. yet each time close mail , re-open it, reverts old accounts! maddening! ideas how fix this? i've repaired permissions , repaired disk, no avail.
