Problems with my Mac

i'm getting annoyed mac. windows 7 laptop seemed work far better 13" pro, , it's doing head in.

since i've had it, photoshop cs5 lags lot, , doing things within application can make whole computer lag. i'm getting glitch with brushes i'm unable access menu, because when click photoshop reason thinks i'm drawing on canvas, , have keep on editing work.

anyway, these problems actual mac.

went away @ weekend , connected secure wifi there fine. no problems. got home , using normal. had go university next day, finishing off work in morning, , had take macbook university me. came asking install updates, , started downloading them until realised going take 40mins, , had lecture in 10, cancelled it. university, , try , boot mac. crashed on loading screen, apple logo , little spinning ring thing. turned off, , on. came on. tried connect university network. said connected, usually, windows laptops, when go preferred browser 'secure login' page comes up, enter university credentials. didn't happen me. go url off friend , wouldn't allow me connect @ all. went through internet wizard thing that's on os x , in end came saying mac wasn't connected wifi @ all. that's first problem.

safari stopped working me, , still won't work. each time try , launch it, crashes, switched on chrome. still couldn't connect, chrome suggested @ firewall settings. did that, , low , behold, firewall has never been on, though told when bought mac 'everything' had been set up.

idea's how can fix these problems? , firewall being off whilst have been away cause problems?

thanks.

have @ activity monitor (applications / utilities /) , select all processes , sort cpu see culprit may be.
check "system memory" tab see "page ins:", "page outs:" , "swap used:" are.

image below uses sorting cpu example

maybe don't have enough ram.

that's bit more complicated, there lot of factors here.
maybe try resetting network settings first via system preferences > network.

the firewall turned off default.
