iPhone 4 Power, Wake / Sleep Button Not Working

my iphone power, wake / sleep button has become unresponsive. having push hard make work. today seems dead.

took apple store them at. out of warranty cost £119 replace. need think before replace it.

genius told me assistivetouch , how use lock screen.

concern if iphone crashes / freezes, battery runs out, won't able restart holding down power / home button.

there away restart iphone if freezes without pressing power button?

genius mentioned if battery died , connected power via usb cable , work.

if froze connecting power restart it?
