hi everyone...i'm going on trip south africa @ end of august , need determining additional gear might want acquire before go. we'll going cape town (for wine , culture), hermanus whale watching , shark cage diving, , kruger safari.
i'm hobbyist, not pro, , trip vacation wife , i. want maximize opportunities great shots without hauling around more 1 medium-size backpack full of camera gear.
currently, relevant gear have:
- nikon d90
- nikon 18-200mm f3.5-5.6
- nikon 50mm f1.8
- decent ball head tripod quick release plate
- nikon sb-600 flash
- variety of 4gb sdhc cards
- cleaning kit (air blower, microfiber clothes, lens cleaner)
concerns setup:
- reach. 200mm isn't when photographing wildlife.
- low light performance. do-it-all zoom isn't fast lens, , d90 isn't best thing these days in low light.
- 1 body? never had 2 bodies, i'd hate switching lenses while trying capture lion or something.
i'm considering few things. let's pretend i'm willing spend $2000 if must.
1. should sell d90 , purchase d7000 (net cost: ~$500-600)? seems have better low-light performance , has u1/u2 instant recall modes quick flip between settings. has 2 card slots instant backup. believe more weather-resistant d90.
2. i'm trying figure out longer and/or faster zoom. borrowed friend's nikon 80-200mm f2.8d trip yellowstone last year, , never used because freaking heavy , ungainly when on camera. found push-pull zoom awkward. i've considered sigma 70-200mm f2.8 os hsm, highly reviewed, appears same weight. also, if bought this, wouldn't able afford second body. have switch out lenses.
3. should instead buy longer zoom, if it's no faster 1 have, along second body? problem is, beyond nikon 28-300mm f3.5-5.6 going expensive accommodate second body on budget (like sigma 150mm-400mm f4.5-5.6), , quite heavy. i'm thinking if 28-300mm, try ultrawide, sigma 10-20mm. tall order on budget if want new body. (~$1000 28-300mm + net $600 d7000 after selling d90).
i'll need allow room in budget couple new filters, have none 77mm lenses.
i'm paralyzed indecision, never having had trip big since started taking photography hobby. advice appreciated!
most long lenses heavy , bulky, period. that's need accept if need more reach.
have 80-200 mm , far favorite lens. since mentioned, need more reach, should getting sigma's 100-300 mm f/4 both affordable , in terms of iq. nikon makes cheap 80-200 mm f/2.8 uses same optical construction friend's lens, features zoom , focus ring rather push-pull construction. price-wise, cost similar third-party 70-200 mm f/2.8 zooms. make sure quick release tripod collar these big lenses have. nikon makes 300 mm f/4 prime isn't expensive. light lens long reach nikon's 70-300 mm.
not 28-300 mm: super zooms may seem attractive in theory, have accept lot of compromises in optical design cover 10x zoom range. not new body: lenses more important bodies. , not quite sure whether need uw zoom: except one-day stint in tanger, haven't been africa. imagine take photos of nature, wild life , perhaps people/»street photography«. landscapes, you're set 18-200 mm zoom: 18 mm corresponds 27 mm on full frame classical wide angle focal length. people photography (if plan make any), i'd 30~35 mm prime (i own faster sigma, nikon's cheaper f/1.8 lens optically better): it's fast, light-weight , focusses in low light. wild life, want long.
