What's eating my hard drive space?!

i have macbook pro, 160gb drive, running osx10.6.8. supposedly have 1.5 gb of disc space free, lost on what's on it! have 45gb of music on itunes, , 30gb of pictures, , novice home user, no large programs installed or used. how find out what's eating of space? tried launch disc utility , verify/repair disc, stops , tells me need run recovery disc, , when that, says don't have room run it.

how clean without deleting pics , music?

have 2tb time capsule, running fine, don't understand completely.

for space issues not explained above, there few things can try, of may or may not apply:

• begin restarting computer first step. resolves issues.
• for time machine users on notebooks running lion, space may being consumed time machine local snapshots, can disabled.
  os x lion: time machine's "local snapshots" on portable macs
• search finder see if space being consumed large file or several large files. adjust 50gb in illustration whatever size deem appropriate.

• use omnidisksweeper, jdisk report, disk inventory x or grandperspective see how space being used on drive. of these apps may show more detail others, try several.
