Never edited, what do I need?

stop head spinning, needed , not needed in photo editing software?

i've never edited, though i've poked around cs5(trial), lightroom(trial). understand difference , either used for. don't know need. i've shot jpeg , want switch raw.
i've read quite bit , there seems variety of opinions point on place, aperture gimp, paint.net. please help, thoughts, opinions, advice.

how enjoy editing photos? how willing invest time in editing in taking photos? how of perfectionist you? if think might enjoy finessing photos or if think frustrated processing limitations, want photoshop. otherwise, lightroom/aperture more sufficient.
