issues with backup folder from external HDD being added to another mac

so changing external hdds macbook. converting firewire hdd networked one. copied backup folder , put "temporarily" on imac. turns out has taken me longer anticipated complete project. noticed imac opening things microsoft word backup folder , not app folder on imac. has caused problem software updater not working properly. there way tell imac not open apps backup folder?
