Is an OS installed onto a drive ONLY usable by the computer that installed it?

question - live on other side of country parents, , trying them late 2007 imac bought them few years back. hard drive crashed, , have spares here in tx. if format , install mac os x snow leopard retail box family pack dvd onto hard drive using mid-2011 imac , mail them (they'll boot via firewire few weeks until visit on easter) work?
