1 of major issues people have encountered itunes match way apple have implemented 25,000 song limit.
limit isn't issue, fact there no obvious way of excluding tracks being matched, if have library containing more 25,000 non itunes purchased tracks can't use service.
way round has been discussed, , being used people (i did mysef). method create new library containing songs wish matched , sign itunes match. have 2 options remainder of tracks. can either have separate library unmatched tracks, or separate master library includes music isn't registered itunes match.
whilst works, not ideal. if have unmatched tracks in separate library (which did) music split in 2 , unlikely listen 1 library much.
if keep separate full library have remember add new purchases both libraries , if make other changes want changes on both libraries. playcounts split out between libraries.
obviously, best solution able match selection of tracks in main library. apple introduce feature soon, in meantime have found way can match selection main library more 25,000 songs in it, without having split library two.
solution comes method pointed out michael allbritton on apple support forum exclude track match. uses principle if delete track cloud won't delete track itunes library has song stored locally. instead, show in library (and playable) icloud status of "removed".
therefore how match library more 25,000 songs itunes match:
warning first, going have temporarily delete songs library lose playcounts etc. shouldn't delete actual files, it's best make sure have backup in case.
ideally, need 2 computers this, need have second itunes library work during process. theoretically 2 separate libraries on same computer, going , forth between 2 regularly become cumbersome. did having imac main library , second library on laptop, ideal setup (especially want laptop use match anyway streaming).
also, before start, need decide tracks want have matched , exclude.
once have decided that, open itunes on main computer don't subscribe match yet. before so, need delete tracks bring size of library below 25,000 songs. suggest delete tracks don't want matched. need bit of space work with, recommend having no more 24,000 songs in library @ point. mean have delete songs want matched, isn't problem right now.
important when delete songs don't move files trash. select box keep files.
once have done that, subscribe itunes match. initial process may take time , during period won't have access deleted tracks. bear me though.
once initial match process has finished, need see how of 25,000 song allocation has been used up. this, create smart playlist criteria match status either "matched" or "uploaded". number little way short of 25,000
need start adding other tracks library, don't want them match. second computer comes in.
create library on second computer , sign match using same apple id. should see of songs start appear on computer. don't download yet.
once there, go main library , add songs library. did artist @ time (although did bundle if didn't have many tracks artists). select file / add library top menu bar , navigate itunes library files , select artist. add tracks aren't in library artist.
important number of tracks add doesn't take above 25,000 limit. example, if smart playlist shows have 24,000 songs far can't add more 1,000 more tracks.
once tracks added need rerun match process (store / update itunes match top menu bar). however, don't need let finish process. keep eye on other library , after while (soon after stage 1 of match process completes) see tracks appear on library icloud status of "waiting". when happens can stop match process.
now, on second library delete songs have appeared. give couple of minutes , find songs still in main library cloud status has changed "removed".
if check smart playlist should find number of tracks in cloud same before added new tracks library. songs in main itunes library not counting against itunes match total.
keep on doing until have added of songs.
once have finished can use remaining icloud space right clicking on selected tracks , adding tracks icloud. time, obviously, when rerun match process let finish , don’t delete files second computer.
still working through stage can confirm still work when size of library exceeds 25,000. current stats are:
total songs 28,705
itunes purchases 2,639
matched/uploaded 24,825
removed 1,241
advantage of method library remains intact (once have put back) rather fragmented between libraries. playcounts , metadata changes synced everywhere (on icloud songs), , quite easy change songs have in cloud (by removing old ones above , adding new selections cloud.
think lot better solution having library split out.
if have signed itunes , split library keep below limit can use method put library again. may have temporarily remove few songs cloud give room adding tracks.
final warning. have had tracks removed icloud week , don't seem cause problems. went on 25,000 limit couple of days ago again without problems. don't foresee problems method but, always, keep backup of data in case.
that's fantastic work, keith. had no idea if idea really work , couldn't test since i'm not near 25k limit.
