Possible to have screen brightness "upgraded"???

pardon ignorance how screen brightness determined (hardware? software? etc?). have 17" mbp intel core duo , screen rather dim, compared wife's brand new mbp. other that, laptop awesome , have no issues other wishing screen brighter.

so, possible (without spending cost new computer ) upgrade screen brightness?

plan new laptop in coming months have few software programs absolutely have run on mbp since runs sl won't work on lion (this biggest full spss license). selling laptop not option. new laptop addition.

as newer macs use better , brighter display technology (led one), can brighter screen new display, though don't know, if there 1 fitting mac, brighter current one.
external display 200 usd , use that.

btw, 2011 mbps can run mac os x 10.6 snow leopard.
