i using laptop last week when rainbow wheel appeared. whole system froze did force shut down, shrugged off , went bed. next day tried boot , after few minutes of apple logo , waiting circle, got prohibitory sign (circle line through it). looked around, found no help. option-s start: tell me "still waiting root device" , it. reset nvram , pram, no help. took in genius bar told dying hard drive. tried backup data onto external while still in store (not sure how getting access not start myself) freeze after few gb. went home , used friends macbook pro go target disk mode. data retrieved without single problem.
got myself new hdd (320gb 2.5" hitachi travelstar z5k500 5400rpm 3.0gb-s sata 7mm notebook drive 8mb) replace supposedly failing stock one. installed correctly, problem 1) doesn't show when hold option on startup, , 2) when booting (snow leopard) install disc not show hdd available disc install on.
have tried using disk utility when booting install disc. drive shows "untitled" parition inside grayed out. told solution format it. when try format (zero out, 7 pass, etc.) given error telling me "cannot allocate memory". removed drive , plugged in sata/usb cable if external. able format way placed inside laptop. still same problem. installer not showing hdd option.
i've read others similar problems may have had failing hard drive cable, wouldn't hdd fail show in disk utility if case?
have been without laptop week , have yet fix issue. becoming increasingly annoyed, saddened, , desperate, personal computer. hoping here can of little assistance issue.

i got macbook pro back, after hdd cable replaced. it's curious thing (and stressful, because think it's motherboard).
able see hard drive, save files, couldn't format it. worked, install lion on ssd when put in macbook (i did target disk mode). couldn't install when in macbook pro.
anyway, when cable broke doesn't mean nothing works. it's few things don't work. got cable out, put in other macbook , boot without problem (so cable worked in macbook). still cable in macbook pro caused problem.
bring hard drive (if want money) , buy cable.
find apple service centers (i'm not in america) lazy , don't thorough job ("we'll replace hard drive, we'll replace etc etc"). found company that's good, try best see what's wrong.
think genius wrong , it's cable. know experience, cable went bad twice.
hard drive cable around €30,-. install yourself.
