Macbook Pro stuck on Apple startup screen

my friend has 17 inch mbp (2009). running osx 10.7.2 , when updated 10.7.3 , tried restart computer got stuck on apple startup screen , won't move past it.

wondering if common problem , if there anyway can solved without taking apple store. example there combo of buttons can pressed past this. hope makes sense , reading. let me know if need anymore information end.
