iMac freezes for a minute

hello,
own late 2009 27" imac , has been serving me great years it's showing issues: while doing ordinary (non-heavy) work freezes 30 seconds. shows spinning wheel , can click around applications can't these applications. after little while continues work fine. happens every other hour.

these signs of harddrive failure or clean lion-install me? ideas?
