1st gen time capsule harddrive replacement & fan mod (with pictures)


i've had 1st gen tc since been released , been running flawlessly many years. i've read many horror stories online tcs breaking down fortunately i've had no issues. @ time 1tb hd isn't enough backup needs i'm installing 2tb western digital caviar green hard drive.
i'm doing fan mod cutting hole in metal tray allow better airflow. overall install pretty easy , took half day. must warn guys not prettiest job , somethings differently if had again.

heat rubber blowdryer , peal off slowly

remove 10 screws

bottom tray removed
[​img]

old 1tb hard drive

new 2tb western digital caviar green hard drive

remove screws old hard drive , install them on new hard drive

remove fan pushing out rubber tabs. (its lot harder install tabs plate.i used tiny bit of dish soup on each tab them slide in easier)

fan removed
[​img]

cut hole in rubber backing , metal tray

added fine metal mesh protect fan debris

made 10 holes in rubber screw holes are. doing allow me open tc without pealing rubber backing off.

im curious, differently, , know if can add 3tb drive?
