Updating from 3o iOS4.2

i have iphone 3g...3gs?......and itunes says update available ios4.2.

when click "update" says:

"updating iphone ios4.2 backup , restore apps., media, contacts, calendars, notes, text messages , settings on iphone"

question - should update? lose settings on phone - have text messages want save - i've transfered photos already.

have been searching afternoon , calling iphone store/help line useless. want know if phone can updated 4.2 , lose - , if - how can stop happening?

computer stupid , iphone stupid-er. i'm sure don't use 1/16 of iphone capable of -just b/c don't understand. :/ can me - , explain i'm 6 year old wasn't born in tech age. ha! thanks!

make backup in itunes.
update iphone in itunes.
after updating, choose "restore backup".
