Using WiFi-only iPad as a mapping device

i plan purchase bluetooth-enabled gps receiver can mapping information on wifi-only ipad while on go, while driving , hiking in remote locations. of course works if there decent app has maps built-in. apps people recommend a) driving, b) hiking?

 

seams little big dragging around when out hiking.
think iphone or dedicated gps better choice.
