Punching In GB11

new gb, having real difficulty understanding 'punching-in' feature fix mistakes

have real instrument track, select cycle-time region (say 4s) , 'count-in' option, press record . . .play 'fix' . . . . program cycles , records multiple 'takes' (mostly dead space if sit , wait cycle 4-5 times. have multiple takes in header, take 1 original no overdub, every other 'take' has been recorded (so take 2 overdub want superimposed on original track). take 2 of course overdubbed section, ie none of rest of track included.

how original track new section? . . . thought happen automatically . . .surely dont need create new track, split/join thingy? . .

sorry, noob question, struggling understand how make work (i've used punch-in on multitrack recorders before, i'm used punching in automatically layering on top of original track)

hope i've explained properly!
