Migrating from an old Mac to a new one.

when have new mac idea restore time machine backup old mac (few years old) or slow down , clog up. better idea keep important files , start clean?

apple officially recommends using migration utillity , running immediately. others suggest starting clean slate , reinstalling apps. have tried both. reinstalling apps , important documents, files, etc. can time consuming. there lot of crud in users system , general files. because people: 1) accumulate apps not use , 2) delete apps simplying trashing them leaving behind many orphan files in system folders. there middle ground: application delete program , delete programs not need or use using program. clean documents folder. clean downloads folder. consider using xslimmer shrink down application files. finally, update remaining apps need , want. have found latter approach work fine , has benefit of getting , running quickly.
