Is iPad 3 truly "retina"?

if ipad 3 have "retina" display 2048x1536 display, , keep 9.7" diagonal screen, give 264ppi. yet read somewhere (already forgot though :p) human eye stops distinguishing between pixels @ 300ppi. 40ppi short, ipad 3 display "retina", or still see pixels, albeit bit hard see?

ps: not in way "dissing" the ipad 3 display. sure still amazing, compared current ipad display.

if i'm not mistake, when sj announced retina display said human eye stops distinguishing @ 270 ppi. if so, pretty close, , notice if trying to.
