Does she have dead HDD?

my friend @ uva , having macbook pro problems. apparently did system update (she's running lion) , once computer done , did reboot, never got past gray screen apple logo , spinning circle (stays on screen more 50 minutes). think hard drive dead

did lot of things trying repair hard drive, holding down bunch of keys while booting, etc. nothing worked.

guys have idea issue may be? if hard drive, can fix without problem. thanks!

 

does have backup of files?
