my pre-spring cleaning under way. feeling archeologist, i've unearthed several rich strata of artifacts dating earlier age.
surprising items have become obsolete way before thought would.
1) firewire cable first generation ipod (2002). little gem had lifetime of less 5 years before being dropped apple. ipod came still works (albeit battery life measured in minutes, rather hours) , since no longer have pc firewire port or card, music on eerily frozen circa 2004. hoobastank anyone?
2) half dozen assorted usb micro/mini cables various canon digital cameras (2001-2011). people still bother hunting these wretched things before transferring pictures computers? not.
3) 6 (six!) rgb monitor cables. legacy of decade in wintel wilderness. last pc ditched clunky format in favor of (equally clunky) dvi. off recycling center these, unless can tell me reason keep them around.
4) keyboard , mouse ps/2 connectors. guess @ time considered great leap forward not need freakin' screwdriver attach mouse computer.
5) 3 component video cables. legacy of first steps wonderful world of hi-definition television. along pair of rca audio cables, state-of-the-art av gear circa 2004. thankfully replaced hdmi. of entertainment center used cage match down @ viper ranch.
6) thirty 8 assorted dc power supplies. casio keyboards hp printers, way of braun personal trimmers (!) , 4 robotics modems. don't know these. i'm loathe toss them out, since keep telling myself electronics project i'm start working on need 1 threw away.
7) black samsonite attaché case. young whippersnappers reading amazed learn @ 1 time people used show @ business meetings toting miniature suitcases, stuffed manilla folders, legal pads, , glossy printed sales literature. served ad hoc lunch box, since had three-digit combination lock, not-so-subtly denoted one's superior business status guys worked out in shop. short of wearing spats , celluloid collar, can think of few things mark 1 hopelessly out of date carrying work.
8) small collection of adult dvds. ten years ago, bachelor friend of mine involved in serious automobile accident. while hospitalized, sister went house pick mail, , happened upon collection of "gentlemen's entertainment." discovery sparked year-long family feud, 1 required great deal of diplomatic effort on part resolve. people still bother buying smut on dvds?
9) canon elph ixus l1 camera. last film camera, bought in 1998. scanned bunch of travel , holiday snapshots took camera icloud photostream. looking @ poorly focused, badly faded, color-unbalanced photos, hardly surprising digital photography has eliminated film amateurs camera bag.
10) at&t digital answering machine, circa 1988. @ 1 time, prehistoric humans used telephones attached houses means of copper wires. if weren't @ home when called, panic ensue, callers had no means of knowing if friends or loved ones had been carried off marauding huns , visigoths. these ancient "answering machines" allowed fervent prayers release left calling.
11) brother daisywheel typewriter. long ago, if wanted neatly taxes or write letter complaining home telephone service, used 1 of these devices. since of aren't perfect touch-typists, brother model had useful autocorrect feature, used tape white gunk on go , press on offending character, obliterating it. i'm still trying come reason hang on this. could use ransom notes, if cause utter confusion down @ fbi lab.
fantastic stuff!
