15" MBP CD With Sound Issues after Combo Update

working on friend's 15" cd 1.83 ghz mbp recently.

running os x 10.6 , needed update latest version, ran 10.6.8 combo update.

after doing so, audio internal speakers crackling sound, audible @ highest volume, , barely audible @ that. no system sounds, itunes, nothing.

if connect external speakers or earbuds headphone jack audio program system sounds heard expected.

reset pram , smb well.

summarize, combo update appears have affected function of internal speakers. , yes, have searched apple's support forums , web well.

suggestions appreciated!
