my girlfriend's computer has been acting strange lately. first thing poked head google search in firefox wouldn't work. type in pressing enter did nothing. next, go , foward page buttons stopped working. microsoft word couldn't save anything, every accompanied startup disk full message when still have on 100 gb left.
after restart, these problems go away.
wasn't of bother until these sorts of problems started happening daily, every 8 hours or so, every 1-3 hours.
took genius bar @ peak of 1 of death spirals , of course first thing did restart it. not @ apple store long enough wait computer bug out again, offered take in stress testing.
picked week later 18 hours of passed stress testing under belt (i have results if need it). mac guys told make backup if hadn't (we hadn't) , if problem happened again, come in , reinstall mac osx.
pretty surprised no problems found took home anyways hoping best. of course, after running word on less hour, wouldn't allow save again.
restarted , tried make backup, computer crashed before half done formatting external hard drive. took mac store , reinstalled mac osx on , while there dragged backup onto computer (of course nothing goes wrong @ mac store). go home , when start install word, doesn't let us. second time, freezes halfway through.
@ point we've pretty given on trying solve ourselves. make appointment , there installed word , firefox. told on computer until problem arrises again. , mac guy tells our problem don't have enough ram. said, "somehow, habits have changed use more memory." sure not problem, had nothing prove (and think getting annoyed of being there, 3 times in 2 days). had activity monitor open showing how had no free memory left. left advice of buying more memory.
(update on problems: function keys except dashboard key did not work, trying empty trash or move trash resulted in error code-50, saving/moving files around unsuccessful)
home, booted computer once more record of things happened make sure issue before buying more ram , having put in ourselves :/ (remember these things happening @ increasing rates more problems showing every time)
noticed that
1. firefox not open , give message, "another copy of firefox open". checking activity monitor, saw no firefox (only when tried open 1 did firefox appear in activity monitor).
2. told install word if had not been installed yet. (back normal on restart)
2. (this right after restart) clicking on microsoft office applications on launch bar resulted in them hopping once; no startup. outlook tried run (as can tell activity monity) become non-responsive. also, of applications on launch bar not work , not save (they looked liked saved when reopened, nothing had been changed)
3. computer slow @ simple tasks switching desktop picture (still had 500mb free memory, 6mb of swap)
4. surprised noticed then. desktop icons missing
5. stuck on logout. launch bar thing still open on bottom no finder menubar on top. (could still open system preferences , activity monitor bring top menu bar back)
6. force quit doesn't work, finder not open. (when stuck on logout)
7. every right after restart error message shows power symbol on telling restart computer.
8. quick helper times take 200% of cpu , hardly ever go down unless quit process
hm.. that's can think of now.
downloaded memtest , ran couple times. 1 time error showed up. think said "sb 1 ss 0 sa 1" don't remember computer ran out of battery : p
ran second time , worked fine, although 2 tests took 3110 seconds.
got ideas? "have changed our habits , using more memory"?
appreciated.
oh ya, in case has it, had taken computer in twice before because hard drive not found. replaced hard drive cable both times because loose.
sounds hard drive taking crap. i'd have replaced after backing files , see if helps. faulty ram. after backing try clean install of os, though sounds hardware related. power supply related. isn't "habits" changing , requiring more ram. that's idiotic word vomit relates nothing computer.
