my iphone 4 having odd sound issues earlier, randomly resolved themselves, not show in windows (xp) or itunes (which have latest version of).
not first time i've had happen. tweaking apple mobile usb device driver or restoring phone connecting macbook first fixes problem.
however, time it's different. when connect phone pc, prompts usb device not recognized message , appears in device manager unknown device. there's no sign of apple driver anywhere.
phone not show when connect macbook, iphoto launch upon connecting.
i'm not sure short of attempt restore/recovery, don't want lose personal data (again).
i've gone through of apple's support steps no avail.
appreciated!
edit: restarted phone, sound issues back. primarily: there no sound except ringer, notifications, , when using phone. key clicks , app sounds muted, , can't adjust volume using hardware buttons or slider (there's not peg slide) in pop-up menu.
in sound settings, ringer sounds when adjust volume there, , have "change buttons" option set on.
edit 2: decided try follow these steps restore phone: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
when power down phone (after sliding red slider), phone automatically starts again.
edit 3: managed recovery mode. when attempting restore, got message:
edit 4: restarted phone after 2 failed restore attempts, , seems working moment, though sound problem remains.
edit 5: final edit before walk away evening. sounds work fine headphones, go silent again when unplug jack. no, mute switch not on. audio lay-over doesn't show when press hardware volume buttons unless headphones plugged in.
still appreciate advice!
