Getting Diablo 2 to work on OS X 10.7 Lion

i know not diablo 3 topic per sé. lot of people have complained on these diablo 3 forums diablo 2 not work on os x 10.7. not directly work.

ok here 3 ways diablo 2 playable on os x, pros , cons of each method.

via sheepshaver (os 9)
works - playable
can use software mode graphics
no right click. have command+click (and control+click when vendoring loot) simulate right click. playable way though.
videos work.

via crossover (xp bottle)
works - playable
can have nice 3d graphics option
right clicking totally works
in game videos not work. i'm not sure how them work. apart game works fine.

via vmware fusion (10.6 client)
not work @ - getting work way still work in progress
opengl mode works
can't sound work
right clicking totally works
mouse slow. so it's not playable. not sure how fix yet.
videos ingame work.

wanted playdiablo 2 again. , didn't want re-partition hdd 10.6 , rosetta. thought hmmmm how going this. thought sheepshaver. , after testing works well. here's how it.

tested on:
imac 2011 21.5 i7
os 10.7.0 , os 9.0.0 (emulated through sheepshaver)

things need

1. diablo 2 , lod discs (you need lod discs if want play lod)
2. mac os 9.0.0 (any os 8.1 9.0.4 should work. tested on 9.0.0)

follow these instructions

1. download latest sheepshaver here:

things note:
set sheepshaver (os9) ram 512mb. lot.
make shared foder. , throw in sheepshaver folder. folder link between os x , os9. os9 side looks hdd called unix.
when make main hdd (disc image) os 9. make 3000 mb (roughly 3gb size.
not use os 9 set assistant. crashes. quit right away.
set os 9 screen size 800x600. that's lod resolution , works way,

4. on downloaded os 9 done os x side , put in shared folder. , fiddle shared folder while os 9 not running. , don't run os 9 shared folder. copy os 9 hdd first.

5. download open gl 1.2.1 here:

, install os 9 side.

6. download carbon lib 1.6 here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1116?viewlocale=en_us
, install os 9 side

7. install diablo 2 , lod in os 9 cds.
things need know:
put cd in before start os 9. make sure cd read os x side run os 9.
yes after diablo 2 installs have quit sheepshaver (os 9) , eject diablo 2 , insert lod disc , restart os 9. install lod.

8. once lod installed there couple game files not installed on disc. copy on lod folder.

9. info - lod app in os 9 , set memory 102400k (100mb) minimum , preferred size.

10. run lod (or diablo 2) in os 9. , connect battle.net in game. auto patch latest patch. cause tried stand alone patches , didn't work me. applies no cd patch.

that's . anytime want play diablo 2 or lod need run sheepshaver , click on d2 or lod app play it.

notes:
game run fullscreen within os 9. leave os 9 window. full screen os 9 crashes , doesn't work according tot sheepshaver developers.

game runs under software graphics. i'm not sure how access opengl under os9. if knows how i'd grateful.

it's good. use lot of time.
remember play vanilla lod on battle.net. leave mod offline play. play funky lod , blizzard won't happy.

save vanilla patch , app files can swap anytime want play vanilla or battle.net. remember mod characters , vanilla characters don't mix @ all.

recommend try mod. it's good.

last note. tried same thing starcraft 1 , os x didn't read sc1 disc properly. , sc1 disc crashed sheepshaver. broodwar disc worked fine. wanted sc1 installed first. yeah i'll have find work around this.

how install diablo 2 via crossover on 10.7 lion:


crossover

1. download , install lastest version of crossover
2. need mount windows side of cds typing terminal:
mkdir cd
makes folder inside home folder. called cd. can delete later. that's windows portion of cd mounts

before need use cd, including multi cd install of diablo 2 need type terminal mount windows side of cd.
mount -t cd9660 -r /dev/disk1s1 cd
, unmount them when done type this
umount cd
when installer asks new disc have unmount disc in terminal, eject put in new disc, mount windows part of using terminal. can click ok let crossover install disc.
, have follow each disc.

3. inside crossover install new software using "other application" , windows xp bottle. , select mounted windows side of install disc or lod disc , install it.

4. have install 3 cd diablo 2 first can install lod using same xp bottle made before.

5. download windows 1.13c patch diablo 2 , move xp bottle same directory diablo 2 in.

6. open crossover , under programs menu select run command , choose windows patch downloaded , run install it,

7. can run play diablo 2 on mac via crossover.
if want play in windowed mode need following:
open crossover , under programs menu select run command , choose windows diablo 2 exe. , before run it, add -window end of run path. save programs menu easy future access.
can play diablo 2 in window'd mode anytime wish.

instructions getting diablo 2 run on intel mac - through vmware fusion , os10.6 snow leopard (client version).
*note well* - method work resulting game not playable. can diablo 2 install. can't sound work. , mouse glitchy in game well. if knows how fix please let me know.

1. download , install vmware fusion 3.1 or better.
can found on msj.

2. following in terminal.

sudo bash
followed by
cd "/library/application support/vmware fusion/isoimages"
mkdir original
mv darwin.iso tools-key.pub *.sig original
sed "s/serverversion.plist/systemversion.plist/g" < original/darwin.iso > darwin.iso
openssl genrsa -out tools-priv.pem 2048
openssl rsa -in tools-priv.pem -pubout -out tools-key.pub
openssl dgst -sha1 -sign tools-priv.pem < darwin.iso > darwin.iso.sig
in *.iso ; openssl dgst -sha1 -sign tools-priv.pem < $a > $a.sig ; done
exit

3. open vmware fusion , install os x snow leopard disc if have disc or disc image have that. used install dvd. , once virtual machine , running wait it's thing. , fail saying "the guest operating system not os x server" or similar. that's good. cause bypass "must have os x server limitation.

4. once fails click ok. , before else go virtual machine menu , cd/dvd , select "using physical cd/dvd drive" when done can quit vmware fusion.

5. edit virtual machine's (you created) config file.
find it, go virtual machines folder , emulated os x. right click , choose "show package contents" , file ending .vmx open text edit , delete following line:
firmware="efi"

add following of separate line
cpuid.1.eax = "0000:0000:0000:0001:0000:0110:1010:0101"

save , quit text edit.

6. open vmware fusion again , start os x snow leopard virtual machine again. yes still has no os on it. used install dvd here. if not work, make sure have "using physical cd/dvd drive" or "choose disk image" selected depending on way going it. swaps other options.

7. once have virtual machine running install dvd or disk image can install 10.6 virtual machine. remember when install choose custom install. , select options want. rosetta not installed default. , having on virtual machine main reason doing whole process.

click boxes want , click ok , install os x snow leopard virtual machine. have cup of tea or whatever drink while installs. it'll take while.

7. when it's done run through initial setup of 10.6, can use software update update os or whatever apps want to. 10.6.3 did have nice gpu driver updates though. optional step one.

8. shutdown 10.6 vm , keep fusion open , go vm's settings.
shared folder idea if want transfer files lion 10.6 vm.
turn sound on.
had choose "connect directly" option under network vm connect internet properly.
cpu , ram. set reasonable level. 1.5gb nice think. that'll run sl , diablo 2. 1gb might not cut can test it. 1 core should ok. used 2 cause have quad core. again test machine.

9. reboot 10.6 vm.

10. download diablo 2 os x installer file. it's ppc only. that's ok cause 10.6 has rosetta.

11. install diablo 2 and/or lod using os x installer on 10.6 vm.

12. go , download latest mac patch diablo 2. 1.13c think is. , install on vm.

13. can play diablo 2. in software mode.
can't sound work. , mouse sensitivity option in game not selectable. makes playing game not @ nice.

 

instead of crossover solution commercial, best bet use wineskin wrapper.
