Contacts missing after upgrade

i had iphone 4 running on 4.3.3. not jailbroken or unlocked.
updated 5.1 last itunes. before updating, itunes automatically made backup of data.
after updating, restore progress started, , went normal, except contacts.

it's weird because when open phone app, shows few moments names, numbers. same happens sms , whatsapp.
thought itunes didn't backup contacts, program found on internet, able check on backup, , contacts there (in fact, export 4 of them because paid version allows export everything, thing's they're there).

so, question is, should do? tried rebooting, restoring again, turning off icloud (even closing account) though hadn't saved contact in there, , many other things. there alternatives involve jailbreaking , pro staff, think problem more basic , hoping of guide me.

subscribing thread because same thing happened sister's iphone 4s when upgraded. ended having reenter of contacts. not happy.

otoh, upgrades on iphone 4 , ipad 1 went perfectly. can't figure out why difference between experience , mine.
