turning time machine on and off


hi all, did searching around , wasn't finding need is...

began using time machine on external hd have. i'm amazed did not come around sooner, have way many duplicated folders of , that. became ridiculous.

anyway, don't want time machine backup every time plug in external mbp. prevent this, turn off time machine in system preferences before plugging hard drive? , turn on when wanting up?

you can leave @ off , use menu bar icon make backup whenever want.

how backup important data.
have 1 500 gb hdd photographs (digital , analog) libraries , editing documents, 1 500 gb hdd personal video footage in editing friendly format.
both 500 gb hdds backed 1 one tb hdd via carboncopycloner.
, 1 tb hdd gets backed 1 tb hdd via carboncopycloner.
therefore have 3 copies of important data.
text documents backed , synched via dropbox , backed 2 hdds (the 2 hdds clone 2 macs' ssds to).
