Upgrade or New Purchase? HELP!

i have "late 2006" version imac (17", 1gb of ram, 160gb hdd). i'm running snow leopard on , have filled hard drive music, photos, , videos point had move external hdd, used strictly backup.

current imac dragging , when went apple store, indicated upgrade ram, may help, in addition doing complete reboot.

given size of hard drive, want purchase external hard drive serve strictly backup.

biggest question whether or not going through of worth or more beneficial upgrade whole system.

thoughts/advice/suggestions helpful.

 

your imac 6 years old. think painfully obvious need buy new one.

since made long, i'd buy external hdd stay afloat , new imac refreshes.
