Hard drive trouble after update, broken keyboard

hello,

macbook (15" unibody late 2009) in poor shape physically working fine until repaired permissions , performed update (snow leopard), , happens when try boot grey screen spinning wheel icon. know it's hard drive because tried hard drive in macbook , worked fine. doubt it's mechanical problem hard drive since happened after update , don't hear weird noises.

however, biggest problem keyboard broken (only caps lock button works, useless) can't press combinations of keys during startup various things. have bluetooth keyboard, doesn't connect @ point in start-up it's useless well.

have macbook (13" lion) , can firewire cable put old drive target disk mode, i'm afraid useless if can't press t while booting up.

tried putting old drive in new computer installation disk came turns out can't (incompatible cpu error or something).

have ideas how can data off of old drive or how can repair disk or return "last known configuration"? i've looked @ dozens of similar posts none of threads i've seen anywhere involve specific problem have now. i'm totally out of ideas don't involve taking computer somewhere fixed.

well, here do. others have own opinions (no doubt).

1. buy 1 of these:

2. pull drive defective mac , plug one, using above hardware.

3. retrieve whatever data need.

4. buy new hdd , usb keyboard, reinstall mac os x on old mac , use stationary system.
