Oddities with Disk Utility in OS X 10.2's install

so popped in os x disc came emac (700mhz) , booted mac through disc. intention format hard drive , start new os 9, ran disk utility. click on partition , erase it, option install mac os 9 drivers grayed out. tried click on actual hard drive...but disk utility unexpectedly quits , brings me os x install screen.

fyi, cannot install os 9. have install os x first, , run 3-cd software restore thing.
