Start up problem help needed

dear all,

last few weeks 4 year old macbook 10 showing black screen @ start while can hear fan sound , sleep light on. boot after 20 minutes after several attempts. have done smc, pram, restarted safe boot no help. hard ware test showing no problem hardware. have done repair disk. after start system behaves when shut down , again press power button start same problem mentioned above - black screen, fan sound, light on no boot sound.
software problem? taking backup , reinstalling software help?? please help.

do have external hdd attached . . . timemachine backup device instance. remove usb/firewire devices , try boot again.

try booting in verbose mode (command + v @ startup) might give indication of problem might be.
