iPad Grabs 58% of Tablet Shipments in 4Q 2011

research firm strategy analytics today announced results of calculations of worldwide tablet shipments during fourth quarter of 2011, revealing apple continues hold majority of market android improves standing on strength of amazon's kindle fire.

peter king, director @ strategy analytics, said, "global tablet shipments reached all-time high of 26.8 million units in q4 2011, surging 150 percent 10.7 million in q4 2010. demand tablets among consumer, business , education users remains strong. apple shipped robust 15.4 million ipads worldwide , maintained strong market leadership 58 percent share during fourth quarter of 2011. apple shrugged off much-hyped threat entry-level android models quarter."

despite strong growth in shipment share android, apple's share down less 4 percentage points since firm's estimates second quarter of last year. android's other gains appear have come @ expense of microsoft , research in motion, registered @ 4.6% , 3.3% respectively during second quarter.

relevance of strategy analytics' numbers have been questioned in past due counting of shipments rather end sales customers. many android tablets seeing little interest consumers, firm's reports seen overstating android's impact counting android tablets still sitting on store shelves while apple selling every ipad make. unclear whether dynamic has changed introduction of kindle fire, has reportedly seen strong adoption , may have lower channel inventory needs due amazon's heavy emphasis on distribution through own website.
