Help: Extend vs. join vs. create

i seeking on how modify set-up of network accomplish following:

have old/unused airport extreme model a1143. current topology mot cable modem connected tc downstairs, airport express upstairs above tc connected via netgear ethernet on powerline adapter. want put airport extreme in adajacent room boost signal , give me additional wired ports.

have existing airport express configured "create wireless network" on wireless tab, not join or extend. tc, cable modem attaches set create wireless network. both using same wireless network name, , express has router mode off.

if express connected via eopl not set correctly, please let me know. it's purpose wireless signal upstairs more reliably , stronger. meant extend...or should have joined wlan?

settings needed aebs if want set boost signal on same network?

i'm using airport utility v6, comments referencing version hepful.

assume either way need factory reset on airport extreme , update firmware.

if understand question correctly, looking have ae extend current wifi network? current configurations not ideal. want enable "allow network extended" under airport > wireless.

once done can go ae , change settings extend network (bridge mode), right have double-nat occurring , can cause issue down road.

far old airport extreme, i'm not overly familiar one. once had option extend network setup on extreme putting in bridge mode.
