Upgraded Radeon 4870 to 5870 (Mac Pro '08)

well, couldn't resist....

1) long wait new mac pro
2) x-plane 10 being quite demanding
3) got discount on 5870

so, still have mac pro '08, 8 x 2.8 ghz, 8 gb ram.

want wait new mac pro, hoping gr8 config radeon 7970.
but, since nice deal on getting new radeon hd 5870 (mac edition), wanted try out , see if 4 year old mac nice boost in gaming.
got mac nvidia geforce 8800. upgraded grfx card ati radeon 4870 year later. difference noticeable.

so, how going radeon hd 4870 radeon 5870?
officially, mac pro '08 not noted supported, placing 5870 easy. same power cables 4870 used. zapped nvram, , working immediately.

fired x-plane 10....
huge difference! can increase settings, , manage better fps!
gone "high" "very high" texture resolution, more puffs, etc.

tbo, thought cpu of mac pro more of bottleneck , 5870 wouldn't "pushed" enough rest of system, plainly wrong.
inserting 5870 inside '08 mac pro has been best thing i've done year p).

must admit mac-gaming 4870 enough (hl2, dirt 2, etc.) able play games @ highest settings, x-plane 10 (and 9 btw..) deserve 3d horsepower of 5870. supported mac pro or not...
