Lion on external drive?

i've got 21-inch imac (newest budget version) snow leopard running win 7 in bootcamp. wanted make absolutely sure can install lion on external drive without messing anything.

also, usb 2.0-drive sufficient running lion, or necessary have firewire-drive increased speed?
