Why won't Applications folder open properly?

when try open applications folder within finder @ username leve, blank page. if click on folder , go info, , @ sharing , permissions have username read/write , else read only. added admin read/write did not change things.

if click on applications icon under favorites in sidebar, can enter folder fine. if enter through drive level, enter ok too. problem if enter username level.

may not critical issue sure irritating. ideas?

 

because 2 different folders. 1 inside home directory (macintosh hd / users / /) third party installed, growl or adobe or other application.
actual applications folder accessed via sidebar (favourites) located on macintosh hd /.
