Apple Officially Drops 'Mac' Name from OS X Mountain Lion

launch of mac os x 10.7 lion in middle of last year, apple trending towards dropping 'mac' 'mac os x', has been name of macintosh operating system more 10 years.

though still used 'mac os x' naming scheme in press releases, apple called new system 'os x lion' on both main product webpage , mac app store product page [direct link].

verge points out, apple has completed transition 'os x' across both mountain lion product pages, , press release announcing developer preview.
the macintosh (as tim cook prefers call it) brand still alive , well, though apple seems focusing term on hardware, instead of software.

lion beginning of unification of sorts between mac os , ios. was, steve jobs put it, happen if macbook air , ipad "hooked up". ios based on mac os x and, @ fundamental level, there more similarities differences between 2 operating systems. dropping 'mac' name of os solidifies subtle, important, distinction between hardware , software.
