TimeMachine and Encryption

newbie mac user. got mac last week, transferred (about 400gb of pics, music, vids).

picked 3tb g-drive. started timemachine , took 6-7 hours backup 400gb. however, thought idea select "encrypt" , last 12 hours, has been encrypting , 50% through. assume it's encrypting entire 3tb?

main question is, once done , i'm on regular backup cycle, assume won't take hours each backup?

or, should start over, format drive or whatever , don't encrypt?

it takes time encrypt.

once intial encyption done go how time machine backsup. few minutes here , there. technically take tiny bit longer normal 1 because of encryption.
