Iphone 4 syncing to old iphone 3

hey all, mate has iphone 4 work phone , needs data incl messages onto old iphone 3 leaving. possible, appreciated

it's possible if iphone 3 , iphone 4 running same firmware or iphone 3 running newer firmware version 4. can restore ios device backup newer or same ios versions, not down.
