Create a clonable OSX + apps + prefs drive to quickly copy to new Mac?

hello.

possible create clean install of os + apps/plugins/preferences/fonts etc use clean cloneable os install other macs?

i'm upgrading mac pro 1,1 5,1 , i've heard there can issues installing snow leopard on new macs come lion pre-installed — there minimum os version (10.6.4 think). have earlier snow leopard install disc, presumably cannot install directly onto new machine combo-update afterwards.

thought of creating virgin install of stuff want onto spare drive in old mac pro, mounting drive new mac pro , cloning new boot drive.

work , bootable, or there model specific files wouldn't work on new machine? has tried this?

yes i've tried not lion. used carbon copy cloner copy internal drives of several macs running snow leopard. cloned them ssd drives hooked using usb sata adapters. booted machine external drives prove , once knew good, dug out putty knives , swapped in new drives.

think same thing work lion have go , use utility make recovery partition yourself. option make lion install usb stick. can done looking inside "install os x lion.app" using show contents. find "installesd.dmg" , use disk utility restore 8gb or larger usb stick has been formatted guid partition scheme hfs+. stick lion restore stick. option cough cough buy lion usb stick apple store. have heard of apple giving them out free people having trouble restoring os free version 1gb stick required downloading lot of stuff on internet.

apple has free utility make own usb stick i've heard makes 1gb kind relies on downloading lot of stuff. more here.
