Can't install Snow Leopard on MBP!

okay, i'm going try keep brief:

• i trying fix friend's mbp, took out old hard drive , replaced one.
• i inserted snow leopard disc error message after boot read "mac osx cannot installed on drive, etc."
• if don't insert snow leopard disc, computer boots screen flashing folder has question mark on it.
• did research: found problem may solvable using target disc mode. have second mbp , firewire cable. tried using both of them "target" computers (because threads vague 1 needs target). neither worked.
• can't figure out if i'm doing right, nothing's working.
• what should do?!

if have questions, let me know. want solve issue, i'm not sure there viable solution...
