hi guys,
have been messing around lion server on past week or , have been reading few articles , posts around setting server manage dns. wanted know few things before doing though.
why letting server manage dns better router?
there walkthrough available on how set up?
current network setup server this:
ipv4 configured manually
ip address 192.168.1.11
subnet 255.255.255.0
router 192.168.1.1
dns server 127.0.0.1, 192.168.1.1
machines setup same ip being difference on each machine. have od running swell, testing @ minute. registering domain name want able access server remotely via vpn , possibly host start using ical server well.
advice appreciated.
i set dns in aebs receive dns isp point 1 of servers mac server. allows clients use dhcp ip , dns values. system check local dns server first when resolving name, , if fails, check against secondary dns server (isp or opendns or google dns or ??? internet lookups).
if hosting directly internet have set records correctly in dns zones such machine name resolves correct online ip.
setup dns forwarders point isp's dns servers.
server resolve local names. values not found on local server forwarded isp. important if using network access w/ open directory. if not set, usernames not resolve against od when logging in workstation.
hope helps.
