I upgraded to new hard drive and my mac recognizes it but it won't boot from it

hi, upgraded mid 2009 13" macbook pro 500 gb hard drive today since installing have had nothing problems. when connect internally recognizes in disk utility when went restore using time machine failed. after couple attempts tried reformatting disk , installing snow leopard won't format osx extended (journaled), format fat using disk utility. says there , input/output error. plugged in same hard disk externally , worked normal, reformatted , installed snow leopard , worked when go replace in macbook doesn't boot it, doesn't recognize os. i'm kinda stuck here. i've looked on web , can't find solutions problem. seems it's sort of compatibility issue seems funny me recognize if wasn't compatible. great.

 

have tried steps shown in following guide?
step #4 might be, problem lies.

how format new hdd/ssd install mac os x or make bootable copy onto​
