How do I make a small smart Playlist on my device?

i have smart playlists on itunes. have ipad , iphone small of songs. (the ipad large come, ipad small 4 comes - itunes library larger, compression).

tried creating small smart playlist points large playlist songs not played , live updating. when told device use playlist, got errors - won't work correctly when device doesn't have large playlist.

how live updating small playlist on devices?
