External HD not showing up on desktop when plugged in

simply title says, since day 1 external hd has not shown on desktop when plug in, whereas every other mac i've ever used has had them show up. setting need change?

mid-2011 imac running latest version of lion.

 

click on desktop

click finder > preferences > general

select external disks
