Old Time Machine Backup onto New OS?

last year replaced macbook's hd, , decided put snow leopard on new one.

had been using leopard, , that's recent tm backup of.

got message saying there not enough room on drive install tm backup, though larger drive old one.

after research, learned not install old tm backup on new os.

reinstalled leopard, , backup, , never got around snow leopard.

, now, accident, i'm going through on again.

there way install leopard backup on snow leopard machine, or need install leopard first?
