iPhoto/Aperture multiple libraries

i have multiple iphoto , aperture libraries containing 500 gb, , consolidate photos 2 libraries: 1 on external drive containing bulk of photos (~450 gb) , 1 containing recent photos , old folders/projects on macbook air. imagine not unlike itunes functionality allows me store selection of pictures on iphone, except in case (macbook air) selection larger.

there way using either iphoto or aperture?
