Upgrade operating system or buy new MBP

i running problems trying acquire new or upgrade existing software. running 10.5.8 , many programs want more current version. if upgrade snow leopard dissatisfied performance? how upgrading lion?

beachball of doom occasionally. 2.4 mhz core 2 duo processor, 4 gb ram, plenty of disk space available.

computer personal, not business use.

or should save money , wait until ivy bridge processor released?

suggestions appreciated.

your mac should run sl or lion fine.
