apple today notified members of ios developer program of new requirement screenshots being submitted iphone , ipod touch apps in app store must meet retina resolution requirements, come in @ 960x640 on devices. updates existing apps must include retina screenshots, if not present, before updates approved apple.
apple has long supported inclusion of retina screenshots iphone , ipod touch apps has not required them, instead allowing developers continue using non-retina 480x320 screenshots scaled viewing on retina devices. retina displays having been included in iphone , ipod touch since 2010, company feels developers should have moved higher resolution , not allow developers update apps going forward without making necessary screenshot changes.

ipad 3 expected appear within next few months carrying higher-resolution display utilize same ideas iphone , ipod touch, doubling display resolution in each dimension 2048x1536 allow sharper content while maintaining compatibility lower-resolution apps using pixel doubling. apple of course not yet soliciting developers high-resolution versions of existing ipad app screenshots, enforcement of higher-resolution iphone , ipod touch screenshot requirements make app store images appear sharper on both current , future ipads.

can't dev use old paintshop program increase image size 2x in both dimensions? if app pixel-doubles, that'd still meet requirement. who's that's not precisely how app meant look. seems silly requirement update since there's no real way enforce screenshots better.
