i've kind of had similar thoughts see them departing further reality. wondered, share characteristics of cult? bad?
checked online source. actually, source offered several views of constitutes cult-like behavior. had pick one, , chose 1 because it's concise.
anyway. let's see...does conservatism exhibit of these traits?
the group focused on living leader whom members seem display excessively zealous, unquestioning commitment. well, maybe not living, but...reagan. check.
group preoccupied bringing in new members. well, liberals. no check.
group preoccupied making money. hoo boy, ever. check.
questioning, doubt, , dissent discouraged or punished. rinos. check.
mind-numbing techniques (such meditation, chanting, speaking in tongues, denunciation sessions, debilitating work routines) used suppress doubts group , leader(s). right wing radio , tv. "chanting", substitute "repeated lies". check.
leadership dictates in great detail how members should think, act, , feel (for example: members must permission leaders date, change jobs, married; leaders may prescribe types of clothes wear, live, how discipline children, , forth). just ask wants marry within gender or republicans think of people live in california or east coast. check.
group elitist, claiming special, exalted status itself, leader(s), , members (for example: leader considered messiah or avatar; group and/or leader has special mission save humanity). are kidding? these guys keepers of sacred beliefs of founding fathers. check.
group has polarized us-versus-them mentality, causes conflict wider society. in spades. check.
group's leader not accountable authorities (as are, example, military commanders , ministers, priests, monks, , rabbis of mainstream denominations). well, congress isn't particularly accountable these days. , think of citizens united. check.
group teaches or implies supposedly exalted ends justify means members have considered unethical before joining group (for example: collecting money bogus charities). i don't know if these guys ever had ethics, yes. check.
leadership induces guilt feelings in members in order control them. not "guilty", made feel should grateful "job creators". check.
members' subservience group causes them cut ties family , friends, , give personal goals , activities of interest before joining group. well, not really, unless refuse deal liberal family members. no check.
members expected devote inordinate amounts of time group. again, no one's forcing them. no check.
members encouraged or required live and/or socialize other group members. not in cases, home schooling fills bill. half check.
can see, conservatism fits quite few of these characteristics. full disclosure: further down page (on site), other people define other characteristics; lot of same themes recur: power, money, control.
, i'm sure hang of these traits on liberals. (and i'm sure try.) liberals tend diverse bunch. trying them come consensus on has been aptly compared herding cats. think it's lot harder accuse them of cult-like behavior.

people tend hate , have 'common enemy' have more cohesion. i'll leave out there. think religions should called cults. it's unfair newer religions called cults , older ones not so. age shouldn't have - weird weird.
